The completion of BOCA's one hundred and second year has seen a number of changes to the
organisation which have placed it in a stronger position to achieve the objectives outlined so clearly in our Constitution.
There is justifiable pride in BOCA's status as one of the very longest established environmental
organisations in the country. It is, of course, not enough to simply exist for a long time; an organisation dependent on
community support must be effective in what it seeks to do. In reviewing the organisation the emphasis has been on
ensuring that BOCA is able to work effectively in today's world in the same way as it did in earlier times.
While seeking to position BOCA as an effective, modern environmental organisation your Board has been very
conscious that our strength is in our Members and their interests in birdwatching. We are coming to reaJise, of course,
that while this is a priority in itself, how much it complements our wider environmental work. To their credit more and
more Members are seeing the benefit of structured data collection using skills acquired in birdwatching and the benefit
to birds and the environment

of BOCA's work. Outside there is a growing realisation that BOCA can provide informed advice
and valuable information on birds and their needs.
The changes to the Constitution approved at the last Annual General Meeting have
streamlined administrative procedures while providing for greater Member access to BOCA's governance. This AGM will see
the new arrangements working for the first time. It was interesting to learn that some of the changes would have had
to be made anyway to preserve our status as an environmental organisation.
The change to BOCA's name has allowed a better presentation to the wider community and a
clearer understanding of what we do. The retention of the acronym, BOCA is also a valuable link with the past.
While the changes made at the last AGM have done much to position BOCA for the future they represent only stepping
stones, there is much yet to be done in developing our organisation to better serve Members and to be effective as a
voice for Australia's birds.
