"The Bird Observers Club" was founded in 1905 to provide friendly contact for informal bird observing. This informality has always been an important element of our activities. First established in Melbourne, the club eventually attracted so many members from other states that there was an appeal to become an Australia-wide organisation, and the present name was adopted in 1991. BOCA now coordinates the largest program of birdwalks, camps, coach trips and extended tours in Australia and has over thirty branches, affiliates and birdwatching partners in the eastern states.
The organisation's name was changed to "Bird Observation & Conservation Australia" in 2007 to reflect the organisation's increased involvement in the conservation of bird habitat.
